Danakil Depression

This triptych is a part of an ongoing series where I create sci-fi landscapes using real places on Earth with a planetary skyline. The Danakil Depression is in Ethiopia and is considered to be one of the hottest places on Earth and is known for it’s alien landscape. The green water is actually sulfuric thermal pools and the rock formations are from the build up of the salt and sulfates that evaporate over time. I was inspired by this place from a geological standpoint because it truly is so unique and appears like a movie set for a science fiction film. I wanted to capture that otherworldly landscape by placing it in a truly out of this world setting.
